Backstage at the Hollywood Palace show on December 26, 1985, one member's eyeball mask (Mr. Red Eye) was stolen, so it was replaced with a giant skull mask... The Eye was returned, but it was in poor condition from being thrown around, and the Residents decided it was a superfluous shell of its former self. This was when they decided to replace the Eye with "Mr. Skull." They continued the 13th-anniversary tour and handed out memorial black armbands with the missing eyeball. The Residents were later interviewed on MTV, where they told the story of it being stolen.
